How it all works

The first step is for you to let me know what you are seeking, be it landscape, building, garden, person(s) and so on. I often work from a selection of photographs, present or past, so do send me any that you wish me to have: the more the better. In the case of local sites in the Great Abington area South of Cambridge, or Finsbury Park in London I am happy to take my own photographs plus onsite sketches, which assist with working out the overall compositions.

Once having got the basic composition plan is a then good moment for showing it to you and getting your feedback before I proceed with the detailed execution.

In setting up the commissions, we need to agree:

  • Choice of medium (oil, watercolour, pastel, charcoal/crayon)
  • Size of artwork/pricing
  • Timing

With regard to size of artwork/pricing, I offer the following broad scale from £150-£600, depending on the size and complexity of the artwork being commissioned. These prices do not include framing and delivery, which are added at cost upon completion.

Timing will depend on several factors, which we can discuss during the commission.

Once we have agreed terms, I would expect 30% upfront payment of the commission before proceeding, with the balance due on completion.

Testimonials

Here’s what my clients have to say

Having lived in Cambridge in my 20s, I had many special memories, especially of the market square as I used t shop there regularly. The painting Toby did for me was a lovely view of the market which included some of my favourite food stalls, cyclists, fringed by the church and senate buildings. The picture combined the historic grandeur of Cambridge with the homeliness of its everyday life.

Miss J Brown - Cumbria

I was quite taken aback by the beauty of Toby’s painting of my home. He has a great eye for detail, even down to the flowers I had in the window boxes. He put me in the picture too, saying what is a home with a mother.

Mrs L Gaine Murphy

I absolutely love the magnificent large oil of Putney Bridge Toby created for our flat.. When we first discussed it I never expected the finished work to be so stunning. It really felt quite strange as I pass the bridge everyday, but had never seen it quite like that. The picture is a breath-taking work of art which the glorious sky, majestic sweep of the dark waters, and it even has ducks swimming in the foreground.

Mr N Barry-Parker

I am very pleased with the detailed abstract leaf pattern Toby did for my living room. I have hung it above the fireplace and never tire of it. It’s got a strong feeling of nature in the texture and depth of the leaves, and is very restful to look at.
